  • 10/29/09--18:00: The Endangered State of the African American Family on The Gigi Iam Show - Part II - Oct 30,2009 (chan 3084100)
  • Popular TV Producer, Host and Actress Gigi Iam interviews and talks with special featured guest and co-host Actress/Model/Stunt Woman, Joanna Mahaffy about the (State of Emergency: The Endangered State of the African American Family. Why Are Successful African American Men Marrying White Women & Swearing Off Ever Marrying African American Women? Part II). The marriage rate for African Americans has been dropping since the 1960s, and today in 2009 African Americans have the lowest marriage rate of any racial group in the United States. In 2001, according to the U.S. Census, 43.3 percent of black men and 41.9 percent of black women in America had never been married, in contrast to 27.4 percent and 20.7 percent respectively for whites. African American women are the least likely in our society to marry. In the period between 1970 and 2001, the overall marriage rate in the United States declined by 17 percent; but for blacks, it fell by 34 percent. Such statistics have caused Howard University relationship therapist Audrey Chapman to point out that African Americans are the most uncoupled people in the country. How has this happened? What has shifted in African American customs, in our community, in our consciousness, that has made marriage seem unnecessary or unattainable? You're invited to Call-in, join in on the Fun! • 02/18/10--17:00: Is There A Leadership Void in the African American Community? - Feb 19,2010 (chan 3084100)
  • In light of the fact that African American communities suffer from a myriad of problems – The question begs to be asked: Is There a Leadership Void in the African American Community? In the fifties and sixties it was easy to know who was for the black and who was a sell-out. Today, the distinction between the two is not so easy. In order to answer this question, we must first answer the following questions: What is today’s African American leaders’ strategy for uplifting the marginalized and disenfranchised African American communities? How do today’s so-called Black leaders compare to the Black leaders of the 50’s and 60’s? Who is providing the vision and leadership to the African American youth? This week I will give you my view on the current state of African American Leaders and leadership. I welcome you to join me in what will be a spirited and enlightening conversation. You are also welcome to ask questions or give your opinion on the subject: The State African American Leadership

  • This special Parent Talk will examine the importance of male teachers in the academic success of African American Males. The lack of African American male teachers has been defined as a nationwide problem (Tate-Billingsley, 2010). Data indicates that only two percent of the American five million teachers are African American males. United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan suggested that if America is to reduce the number of African American young men who fail to graduate, it is imperative that men of color are teaching (Tate-Billingsley, 2010). During this amazing conversation we will discuss the reasons behind the African American male teacher shortage and its impact on minority students. In the 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males a study conducted by the Schott Foundation it was reported that the graduation rate for African American Males in the United State has become so dismal that an African American male has a better chance of being incarcerated than they have at earning a high school diploma. According to the report, the national graduation rate for African Americans males is 47% compared to 78% for white male students. This represents an achievement gap of 31%. Maryland has a graduation rate of 55% which is 8% higher than the national average and places the state in the top ten of states with large minority populations. Invited guest for the first show includes: · Dr. Roy Jones is lecturer and executive director for the Eugene T. Moore School of Educations Call Me MISTER Program at Clemson University.
